Three simple ways to be a better adult in 2018

Well, the end of another year is drawing near, and many of us are surprised that the human race made it this far. I can’t help but reflect every NYE, and after all of the natural disasters and deadly attacks this year the reflection period seems to be on steroids. I recognize I’m one of the lucky ones.

Every year at the end of December, I tend to find myself writing down my vision for the next year and beyond; what I want out of life, what I want to do more of and less of. I have sort of standing resolutions that come back every year; I want to read more and blog more, I want to exercise more and eat better, I want to not sweat the small stuff. Those are all resolutions that are on my mind 365 days a year, but they come to the forefront of my brain when December 31st hits.

I’ve added some new resolutions to my list this year, and those all have to do with being a better adult. In 2018 I will turn 30 in May and get married in September, so I guess you can say I’ll be a grown up. Here are some simple ways I plan on being a better adult:

1. Learn how to use a waiter’s corkscrew

It’s embarrassing to admit, but I have never successfully used a waiter’s corkscrew to open a bottle of wine. I always use winged corkscrews and even then I don’t always get the desired results. There have been countless occasions where my fiancé and I have shown up at a party with a nice bottle of wine we’re excited to crack open, only to find that I can’t open it because it turns out some people get by just fine with only waiter’s corkscrews in their kitchen (heroes).

Part of the reason I’ve never learned how to use a waiter’s corkscrew is that there’s always been someone around who can do it for me. However, it’s time to step up my game. My taste in wine has gotten more sophisticated (read: snobbier) which means my twist-top wine bottle days may be coming to a close. The plan is to corner my fiancé, my wine-industry-working BFF, or another functional grown up and ask them to patiently show me how it’s done. Should be a fun time. 🙄 🍷

2. Send cards in the mail

I solemnly swear that next year I will send Christmas cards. My heart flutters with delight every time I receive a Christmas card in the mail from a friend. It shows they’re thinking of me, they took the time to write down their thoughts, wish me a Happy Holidays, and mail the damn thing. The age of digital communications makes receiving letters and cards in the mail even more special. I also want to send more birthday cards, congratulations cards, thank you cards, and (because they are unfortunately sometimes necessary) sympathy cards. There are some people I am close to who enrich my life in so many ways, the least I can do is send them a card when the occasion allows for it.

3. Make a frame collage

OK so this frame collage trend is the coolest and I want one. Hanging framed artwork in my apartment a few years ago definitely made me feel like a grown adult human who had the ability to take over the world, so it’s time to put a tiny bit more effort into my home décor. I’ve even started a frame collage inspo board on Pinterest! Progress 💪🏻

If I manage to pull this off I will certainly update le blogue with all the juicy details, I’ll need to enlist the help of my much more décor-inclined girl squad to make it happen, that is AFTER they show me how to open a bottle of wine with a waiter’s corkscrew. Bless them.💗

If being able to open wine, send cards in the mail, and put effort into home décor isn’t #adulting, I’m not sure what is. I’m ready for you 2018, let’s do this.
